Jesus the Lamb of God & the Lion of the tribe of Judah

Jesus is mentioned different times in the word of God ( Bible) as the lamb of God or the lion of the Tribe of Judah, what pop out from our eyes is that this two animals are completely different in fact we can say that they oppose them self in fact the lion is known for his roaring and the lamb for his quietness, the lion for his strength, boldness and greatness but the lamb for his weakness, humility and shyness.

So how is possible that this two different animals can be refer to the same person? How can Jesus be at the same time a lamb and also a lion? This is what we are going to explore in this article.

Jesus as The Lamb

We see the lamb appear often in the bible one of the most profound story of the bible is when God through Moses asked to the children of Israel who were in bondage in Egypt to sacrifice a lamb and put the blood on the door to prevent the angel of death the entrance in the House and ultimately the death of the first born child(Exodus 12), so here we see how the lamb is use to purchase the life of a man (exactly what Christ did for us who believe in him), later on we see Moses commanding the Israelite to sacrifice everyday a lamb on the morning at 9:00 and a lamb in the evening at 18:00 and this two sacrifices were to cover the sins committed during the day and the night time  symbolizing the exact time in which Jesus was put on the cross (9 am) and when his body without life was took down from the Cross. The lamb was used to cover the sins in the old Testament and when Jesus appear in the gospel of John this is the way john introduced him (Joh 1:29)  “The next day John sees Jesus coming to him and says, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

So Jesus was (is) the lamb who not only cover ours sins like the lamb of the Old testament but he completely take away ours sin.

Jesus as The Lion Of the Tribe Of Judah

Different times in the bible God refer to himself as the Lion (Hosea 5:14 ; Hosea 10:11) and we can see that the lion emphasize a Majestic (Kingly) picture, what Our Lord is!! Jesus is called the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We can See the Lion of Judah appearing for the first time in Genesis 49:9-10 where we have a prophecy concerning the second coming of Jesus. In fact the bible refer to Jesus as the Lion, talking of his second Coming where is going to rule the nations as a King. Hosea 10:11 speaks of the second coming in this way “They shall walk after Jehovah; He shall roar like a lion. When He shall roar, then the sons shall tremble from the west.”

Conclusion

Jesus is referred as the lamb because by his sacrifice we are redeemed and his blood cleansed our sins all this was fulfilled in his first coming but in his second coming he will come as a roaring lion (Isa 31:4) and he will rule the nations.

Do the bible give us others parallel to back up this one (Lion&Lamb)? The Answer is YES, Hebrews 7:17 speaking of Jesus says “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek”; Melchizedek was the king of salem and he was also the priest of the most High God (Hebrews 7:1), now for us that doesn’t make any difference but in the old testament it was impossible to be a king and also a priest because God assigned the priesthood to the tribe of Levi and promised to david and his descendant(the Tribe of Judah) to be king forever.

In the first coming Jesus came as a priest and the bible call him the High Priest (Heb 7:26), but in the next time he will come as the King of Kings. The Imagery of the lamb & the priest portray the humbleness with which Jesus came the first time, the lion & the king portray the Power and authority with which he will destroys his enemy and rule the earth for one thousand years. The first time he came as a baby in manger the second time he will come with power riding in the cloud, the first time he enter Jerusalem with a donkey the second time he is coming riding a horse.
